There is a hot fix for this problem that is described in Microsoft Article ID: 976187. First, some DVDs do not function properly with ALPM ( Adaptive Link Power Management). These hardware issues should not, however, apply if the BIOS correctly recognizes a DVD and the OS installer reads from it without problems. Possible problems include the need to update the BIOS or a DVD's firmware or attempts to use a DVD which is incompatible with R2. There is a fair amount of Internet traffic on this subject. BIOS correctly listed the SATA DVD drive. We had a situation in which a DVD drive worked properly for the installation of Windows Server 2008 R2, but was then not recognized when R2 was operational.
